Mrs. Madeleine Greenwood

Madeleine Kate Greenwood, née Owen, was born circa 1851 in Bilston, Staffordshire, England, to Lousia and Josh B. Owens, a vicar. She had three siblings, Edward A., Josephine F., and Hugh B. On December 11, 1873, she married Charles William Greenwood, a barrister. The couple had six children: Alice M.; Mabel and Mary, both of whom joined the Society of Women Journalists; John Owen; Huber; and Augustus H. 

Greenwood was a founding member of the Society of Women Journalists. She was a councilmember for much of her tenure and served as Honorary Secretary from 1898 to 1902. She was elected a vice president of the Society in 1902. A freelance journalist specializing in women’s economic issues, Greenwood contributed to a wide variety of periodicals during her career, including the City Press, Englishwomen’s Review, Gentlewoman, Humanitarian, Ladies' Home Paper, MacKirdy’s Weekly, Our Home, Queen, Shafts Magazine, Votes for Women, Wallasey News, Westminster Review, Woman, Woman's World, Women’s Herald, Women's Tribune, and the Yorkshire Post. 

Greenwood died on June 1, 1932 at the age of 80.
