Miss Edla R. Wortabet

Edla Ralouka Wortabet was born circa 1866 in Beirut. During the First World War, she served as a Nursing Sister in France from October 25 to November 3, 1914, under the British Red Cross Society & Order of St. John. Although she was invalided home after just over a week of active deployment, she continued her wartime contribution by delivering lectures to troops at her local War Office and YMCA. In recognition of her military service, she was awarded the British War Medal, the Victory Medal, and the 1914 Star. Wortabet continued to work as a Nursing Matron at Hindhead Nursing Home in Surrey after the war’s conclusion.

Worabet joined the Society of Women Journalists in 1906. She was a regular contributor to the British Journal of Nursing.
