Miss Lina M. Thorne
Lina M. Thorne is likely the pen name for Mary Pauline (Lina) Quelch. Lina was born on March 18, 1890, in Milton, Kent, England, to Mary Quelch, an editor, and Edwin Quelch, an actor, architect and surveyor. Between 1891 and 1910, Edwin added the surname Thorne, eventually dropping Quelch. Lina spent her childhood and early adulthood in London. She was a member of the Society of Women Journalists from 1908 to 1910.
In 1910, Lina married author Frederick John Niven and, in 1920, the couple emigrated to Nelson City, British Colombia, Canada, for Frederick’s health. Lina became the editor of the Nelson Daily News. In 1962, she joined the Canadian Authors’ Association.
Lina Niven died on October 16, 1968, at the age of 78.
